Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from the aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
